Phosphor Bronze Part Stamping
Phosphor Bronze Material

Phosphor Bronze Material for Stamped Parts

Phosphor bronze is a high-performance copper alloy alloyed primarily with tin and phosphorus that delivers a unique balance of durability, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength, and electrical performance. Its blend of mechanical resilience and wear resistance makes it a preferred material for demanding industrial, electrical, marine, and precision engineering applications. With excellent elasticity, low friction, and strong resistance to wear and corrosion, phosphor bronze is widely used where reliability and long-term performance are essential.

Phosphor Bronze Characteristics

Composition
Phosphor bronze is a copper-based alloy containing tin (typically 0.5 %–11 %) and phosphorus (about 0.01 %–0.35 %), with copper making up the balance. Additional elements such as lead or zinc can be included in some grades for specific performance tweaks, such as improved machinability.

Mechanical Strength & Fatigue Resistance
Phosphor bronze exhibits high tensile and yield strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and durability under repeated loading. This combination makes it ideal for springs, bearings, and components subject to cyclic stress.

Corrosion Resistance
The alloy resists corrosion in marine and industrial environments better than many copper alloys. Tin enhances resistance to oxidation while phosphorus helps stabilize the microstructure against environmental degradation.

Wear Resistance & Low Friction
With a low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance, phosphor bronze is suited for sliding and rolling applications such as bushings, thrust washers, and gears.

Elasticity & Spring Properties
The alloy’s excellent elasticity and resilience make it ideal for spring components, where consistent return to shape and performance over many cycles are critical.

Moderate Conductivity
Though not as conductive as pure copper, phosphor bronze’s electrical and thermal conductivity is sufficient for many connectors, switches, and contact assemblies.

Machinability & Formability
Machinability varies by grade — leaded versions enhance cutting performance while others remain workable through standard forming and machining processes.

Quality Assurance

At Wiegel, quality is our utmost priority. We conduct a feasibility review on the part to ensure manufacturability at the start of every program. A run-at-rate study is also implemented on the first run to ensure quality before large-scale production. This enables our quality and production management teams to monitor controls closely and make sure jobs run smoothly. Manufacturing continues once testing checks out, and the first batch of conforming parts is produced.

Our quality management system is comprised of sophisticated quality technology and controls, continuous improvement programs and a superior quality laboratory and management team. Throughout our production plant, we deploy camera vision systems and sensor technology, in which we design and fabricate unique to every production program. Our vision system technology operates in coordination with our stamping production machinery to thoroughly inspect and identify part features and dimensions with automated camera imaging. This quality control process ensures every part produced with our stamping equipment always yields 100% quality and zero defects.

Power your application more effectively with high-performing busbars from Wiegel. With a dedicated team, innovative equipment, and superior quality control, we provide exceptional services tailored to each customer’s unique needs.
